The Power of Discipline — and Its Limits — in Mental Health Recovery
We often hear advice like “just be disciplined and try harder” or “you need more willpower” when it comes to mental health struggles.
“MindHK conducted a recent study in 2022 that revealed 44% of respondents in Hong Kong believed that mental illness was due to a lack of self-discipline and willpower.” (MindHK, n.d.)
While high self-control is associated with better emotional regulation and fewer depressive symptoms, treating mental illness requires a comprehensive approach, including professional help, self-compassion, and therapy.
Understanding where effort helps — and where it can harm — is key to building a sustainable, compassionate path toward healing.

The Benefits of Discipline and Willpower
When used wisely, discipline offers structure and predictability — both essential in managing mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety, or ADHD.
Routine acts like keeping a sleep schedule, exercising regularly, or practicing mindfulness can gently train the mind to find stability amid emotional turbulence.
For example, someone recovering from anxiety might use small daily goals — like a five-minute meditation or journaling each morning — as anchors of self-efficacy.
Each act of follow-through reinforces a sense of agency: I can do something to help myself. Over time, these actions create momentum and resilience.
Why Healing Isn’t Just About “Trying Harder”
Yet, mental health recovery isn’t solely the result of grit. Unlike a physical goal — such as improving fitness — mental illness involves factors often beyond conscious control: neurochemical imbalances, trauma, genetics, and social circumstances.
Telling someone to “try harder” can minimize these realities and place an unfair burden of blame on the p erson suffering. Moreover, willpower can be depleted, like a muscle, and overusing it can lead to burnout.
A person in the depths of depression may genuinely want to get better but lack the neurological energy to act.
Forcing discipline during severe depression can backfire, increasing feelings of self-blame, guilt, and failure when a person cannot "force" their way to feeling better.
In this context, willpower alone is not the missing ingredient — access to therapy, medication, social support, and compassionate understanding are equally vital.
The Harm of the “Just Be Stronger” Mindset
Framing mental illness as a failure of character fuels stigma. It suggests that people with mental health challenges are weak or lazy, which can deepen shame and discourage them from seeking help.
This misconception often silences those already struggling, making recovery harder rather than easier and accessible.
“A study performed by MindHK in 2021 reported that 3 in 5 people diagnosed with a mental health condition in Hong Kong never disclosed their diagnosis to anyone, with 43% reporting concerns of stigmatisation and discrimination”
Society doesn’t tell someone with asthma to “breathe harder.” Similarly, we shouldn’t imply that someone with a depressive disorder simply isn’t trying enough.
Believing that mental illness is simply a lack of willpower can be harmful and drive those struggling to deeper isolation.
Healing is not a contest of endurance—it’s a complex, deeply personal journey.
A Balanced Approach to Healing
True recovery blends structure with self-compassion. A balanced approach might include:
Professional help that combines traditional and alternative therapies such as music therapy, creative arts therapies, forest therapy, counselling and medication.
Healthy structure through manageable routines, sleep hygiene, and nutrition.
Self-compassion — acknowledging limitations without judgment. Discipline works best when combined with kindness to oneself, reducing the risk of burnout.
Support networks — friends, family, or communities that offer encouragement and reduce isolation.
Flexibility — adjusting expectations based on one’s mental state rather than rigidly adhering to “productivity.”
In essence, discipline is best seen not as punishment or proof of worth, but as a supportive framework for healing.
Combined with understanding and appropriate treatment, it transforms from a source of pressure into a foundation for steady, sustainable wellness.
