What is a Wellness Retreat?

A heartwarming message at this wellness retreat locale in San Diego, California, USA.

A wellness retreat is an opportunity to step away from your usual routine and devote focused time to your physical, mental, emotional and spiritual wellbeing. Depending on the program, a retreat may include meditation, yoga, sound bathing, forest bathing, journaling, nourishing meals and time for personal reflection.

But with so many retreats available, how do you choose the right one? Start by considering your goals, preferred practices, budget, travel distance, group size and the experience of the facilitators.

I remember attending my first retreat during the latter part of the pandemic. My mindfulness practice was beginning to blossom, and I wanted to meet people who shared my interest in mindfulness and personal growth. A spiritual guide suggested that I attend a retreat, so I began researching my options.

When I arrived at the retreat center I didn’t know what to expect. I was excited to be at my first retreat, to meet my new tribe. The cool mountain air invigorated my body and relaxed my shoulders. Exhale. I was also nervous: was I ready? Would I fit in? All of those fears were erased as I was greeted by fellow retreatants who kindly offered to help me find where I was staying.

I was the eager-beaver retreatant, keen on doing everything. I woke up early to do the sunrise meditations and morning qigong. I made sure to speak up at every circle. And really, I wanted to feel like I belonged with this group whose teachings I held close to my heart. I can remember at the meditation hall seeing a sign saying, “arrived, at home.” A sense of warmth radiated from within, I knew I had found a place I belonged.

Looking back I can smile. I’m a bit more chill now, not needing to seek, but to be present with what’s around me. My first retreat experience was so memorable and transformative. I met some dear souls I’d remain friends with and understand how important it is to take the time to slow down, connect, breathe, and just be. I’d encourage anyone to try attending one. Let me offer some pointers to help ensure you select the wellness retreat that’s best for you.

What Happens at a Wellness Retreat?

Your wellness retreat could include a guided forest bathing session.

There is no single standard wellness retreat schedule. Some retreats are highly structured, while others allow participants to create their own rhythm. Before booking, look carefully at the balance between guided activities, personal time and optional sessions. A well-designed agenda may look like:

  • Morning mindfulness, movement, or breathwork.

  • Group workshops or guided practices

  • Time for meals and informal connection

  • Quiet time for self-reflection, journaling, or rest.

  • Optional activities rather than a completely fixed schedule

  • An evening circle, sound bath or closing ritual.

I prefer retreats where activities are optional. I want to have agency over how I spend my time, including the ability to take a break when I need one. I also appreciate when a retreat has balance between group activities and time for personal reflection. When a retreat is non-stop action, it’s hard for me to really drop into myself as well as feel rested enough to truly receive what is being offered.

Before booking, learn who is leading the retreat, what training or experience they have, what practices they teach and how they support participants who may feel overwhelmed or emotionally vulnerable.

How to Choose the Best Wellness Retreat for you

It really depends on what you want to get out of a retreat you attend. When I chose my first wellness retreat, I selected the one that fit the type of mindfulness I practiced and was reasonably close to where I lived (a 5 hour plane ride!) That being said, here’s a checklist of things to consider when choosing a retreat:

Potential Benefits of Attending a Wellness Retreat

Nature place at a wellness retreat in Hong Kong
Research has shown spending time with nature could relieve stress, lower blood pressure, improve mood, and help with sleep.

While at the retreat, it felt like such a relief to feel like I didn’t have to rush somewhere, to get to an email, to have a to-do list, to feel I’m constantly catching up. All I had to do was just be. One of the greatest health benefits of a wellness retreat is the stress relief. If done well, you’ll feel safe to let your guard down, allow your body to truly relax, and breathe a bit carefree. Some participants may find that less screen time, exposure to natural light, reduced noise and a more consistent schedule help them sleep better during or after a retreat. A nature retreat may support relaxation and help reduce feelings of mental fatigue. You may also receive a creativity boost as your mind settles allowing space for your mind to reflect, see things differently, and permission to take action on those thoughts. Your mental health will also improve. Spending time in stillness, in self-reflection, while relaxing your body and settling your mind will do wonders for your overthinking mind. Lastly, a thoughtfully facilitated retreat can also give participants time for reflection and personal insight. However, retreats are not a substitute for medical or mental-health treatment, and people dealing with significant distress should seek support from an appropriately qualified professional.

Wellness Retreats in Hong Kong and Beyond

Wellness retreat at Hong Kong
Not Thailand, Not Bali. Mui Wo on Lantau Island, Hong Kong. A nice place for a wellness retreat.

Bali, Costa Rica and Thailand may be popular wellness destinations, but a transformative retreat does not have to take place overseas. Retreats can be held in the mountains, on an island, in a forest, at a spiritual center or within a city.

Hong Kong may be known as a busy metropolitan city, but it also has countryside, hiking trails, beaches and neighboring islands that can provide a different retreat environment. For local participants, choosing a retreat closer to home can make the experience more affordable and reduce travel stress.

When searching for a wellness retreat in Hong Kong, consider the location, transportation time, weather, accommodation, noise level and access to nature. Search terms such as “wellness retreat Hong Kong,” “wellness retreat Hong Kong,” “nature retreat Hong Kong” and “weekend retreat near Hong Kong” may help you compare options.

When I first searched for a mindfulness retreat I was overwhelmed by how many options there were. However, I managed to find one near where my family lived. I chose that location as I could not only attend the retreat, but visit my loved ones afterwards.

Who can Benefit from a Wellness Retreat?

Lifelong memories and friends made at my personal mindfulness retreat in San Diego, California.

There are so many reasons why you should attend a wellness retreat, though they are all personal and vary between individuals. For me, it was seeking connection with a community of like-minded people, to experience something new, to deepen my mindfulness practice, and to leave my day-to-day environment. Other reasons to attend a wellness retreat could be:

  • Take a break from daily responsibilities.

  • Rest, reset and recharge.

  • Explore new wellness practices.

  • Deepen an existing mindfulness practice.

  • Spend intentional time in nature.

  • Meet teachers, facilitators and like-minded participants.

  • Experience local culture and cuisine.

  • Spend quality time with family, friends or a partner.

  • Create space for reflection and new perspectives.

The best wellness retreat is not necessarily the most expensive, distant or highly structured. It is the one that matches your goals, energy, budget and preferred way of learning.

Take time to research the facilitator, schedule, location, inclusions and participant reviews. If you are new to retreats, a shorter local experience may be a comfortable place to begin.

FAQ's

Are wellness retreats suitable for beginners?

Many wellness retreats welcome beginners, but the experience varies. Check the program description, physical requirements and expected level of prior experience before booking.

Consider your goals, budget, preferred practices, travel distance, group size, schedule, facilitator experience, inclusions and cancellation policy.

A half-day or one-day retreat may be enough for someone who wants to try a new practice. A weekend or longer retreat offers more time to disconnect, build relationships and settle into the experience.

Check the organizer’s instructions, but common items include comfortable clothing, weather-appropriate layers, a water bottle, journal, personal medication, toiletries and any equipment listed in the retreat information.

No. A wellness retreat may support rest, reflection and healthy routines, but it should not replace medical treatment or professional mental-health care.

I say this with bias as a retreat goer, but absolutely yes. The physical, mental, spiritual, emotional, and psychological benefits of a wellness retreat equate the cost. The potential relationships not only with fellow like-minded participants, but also a deepened relationship with self should you partake in inner work are also lifelong benefits. Many people rarely give themselves time to slow down, to rest, to reflect, and peer at the truth waiting within. A retreat, whether it’s a mindfulness, yoga, or spiritual, gives you the permission to do just that.
